Crow's Nest

This work, titled “Crow’s Nest”, is a self portrait referenced from a photo shoot of myself wearing the crafted work of artist and designer Sari Cheah. The themes of spirituality and dualism between the self and the external world, nature and artificiality, faith and materialism, etc.. are explored within this work, drawn from experiences within my own mind, lived experience and spiritual journey. The materials used in the work are charcoal, conte, and chalk, used to heighten the ghostly and ominous atmosphere that is consistent within my recent style, and conceptual framework around an exploration of the soul, the mind and the body. The monochromatic stylization compliments the heavy contrast in the work, another major aspect of the conceptual groundwork. Symbolizing duality with visual contrast, I deliberately emphasize the darks and lights, not only within a broader composition, but in the minutely detailed elements, seeing the worn objects as the body, constantly experiencing change, and the subject under the clothing as the infinitely powerful yet constant soul. I made this work with careful observation of the reference for the structure, later resorting to spontaneity and intuition for the more detailed components like the eyes and textural elements. This piece is a continued visual exploration of myself within change and the unknown, using elements that portray a veil slowly deteriorating as the net of thoughts expands and knowledge of another self is realized, a constant ascension and descension on the crow’s nest.
